all my little plans and schemes - nothing but a bunch of dreams. all i really needed to do - was maybe some love. i don't expect you to understand - the kingdom of heaven is in your hand. i don't expect you to wake from your dreams - too late for pride now it seems. why must we be alone? it's real, love - yes, it's real. -- john lennon

little red riding hood

When I was a freshman in high school my horn section leader was named Kristin. Kristin was all of about 5'3", freckle-faced and brown-haired. She had a waist the size of my pinky finger. During marching band she would skip around with her jug of water with a huge cheesy smile on her face yelling "Mr. Larry!! WHO'S your favorite section?" Mr. Larry would grin paternally and say "The horns, Kristin, you rule all." Before every competition she would gather us all together in a circle and give us a pep talk; then, following her lead, we would run around and give butt wiggles to all the other sections. We were the coolest. One day at summer band camp she made up a song with a drum major named Dave. She and Dave gathered all us freshies in a circle and sang to us a sweet song:

Up, up, up with knowing your music
DIE DIE DIEEEEE if you don't
It's you and you and you (points)
And you and you and you
DDDDIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

In that last line she would run around in a circle with arms flailing, spit spewing out of her rusty mellophone, still with a huge smile on her face.
